Final Thoughts on the Development of Dark Waters (and addressing the Steam key issue)
It's standard for developers to write a post describing what went right and wrong during a game's development after the title has reached completion, so we're here to wrap things up (and address an issue with Steam keys at the end).
What we learned
Dark Waters was a learning experience. There were parts of the project that ended up being way simpler than expected, and there were others that unexpectedly strained our budget. We had real engine difficulties that have caused minor glitches that we're still patching out, which we didn't know about until we'd sunk a number of hours into the engine. After this project we will be leaving Tyranobuilder behind for something that does not have these issues.
If we had to do it all over again, we'd probably restructure how we approached BGs, the engine itself, and our choice of music format. But the game is complete, released on Steam, and it's time to move on to the next one with all the stuff we learned from this one. We learned quite a bit and plan to make the next one that much better. Dark Waters ended up being a game that's a bit rough around the edges but has a lot of love put into it. We hope that's communicated to the player, and that they'll look forward to the next one.
The biggest thing we learned? Even short games take a long time to work through, and require a lot of fine-tuning and adjusting along the way. Props to the devs who start with much bigger, more ambitious things.
Thank you for all your support! Even if you didn't buy and just gave us a kind word of support or retweet, it's appreciated.
Regarding Steam Keys
This seems to be an issue we've been having because of the way we structured the store page. This is another thing we'd do differently, if we could redo the process. We're still waiting on technical support to help us fix this but may end up beginning a new store page that exclusively has the paid version and mark the old page as being for demos (if you lose your game file somehow, leave a comment and we'll make sure you get a new one!).
Again, big learning experience.
You can shoot us a line at OutisMOF@gmail.com if you still have not received a Steam key and we'll make it right.
We're grateful for your patience, as always. Thanks for continuing on this journey with us.
